How to Set Up and Use DreamHost Email Forwarding: A Complete Guide

Did you know that over 70% of professionals use email forwarding to manage multiple inboxes more efficiently?

It’s true!

And if you’re using DreamHost, youโ€™ve got some seriously handy tools at your disposal to make this happen.

But let me tell you, figuring out how to set up DreamHost email forwarding the first time can feel like a puzzle with missing pieces. Been there, done that!

In 2025, DreamHost changed the way to forward fully hosted email. Previously it was possible to do both.

Forward and Fully Hosted Email. Now you can do only one of them. I recently talked to one of their technical support members and they confirmed it.

The good news? Once you get the hang of it, itโ€™s smooth sailing from there.

Whether youโ€™re looking to forward DreamHost email to Gmail, set up domain-level forwarding, or troubleshoot when things donโ€™t work, this guide has got you covered.

Trust me, Iโ€™ve fumbled through all the steps myself and came out the other side a pro! Letโ€™s dive in and make email forwarding your new best friend.

What Is DreamHost Email Forwarding?

Okay, so letโ€™s start with the basics. DreamHost email forwarding is a feature that allows you to redirect emails sent to one address to another address of your choice. For example, you could forward emails sent to info@yourdomain.com straight to your Gmail inbox. Itโ€™s like having someone sort your mail and deliver it right to where you want it.

I remember when I first learned about DreamHost forward email options. I had just set up a shiny new website and created a professional email like hello@mydomain.com, but I didnโ€™t want to check another inbox every day. (Who has time for that?) Instead, I forwarded everything to my Gmail account, so I could see it all in one place. Pro tip: This setup works wonders if youโ€™re managing multiple domains or side hustles!

But hereโ€™s the kicker โ€“ DreamHost email forwarding isnโ€™t the same as hosting an actual mailbox. Itโ€™s โ€œforward-only,โ€ meaning you wonโ€™t store emails on DreamHostโ€™s servers. If you need to store and send emails, youโ€™ll want to set up a fully hosted email address instead.

How to Set Up Email Forwarding on DreamHost

Setting up DreamHost email forwarding is pretty straightforward once you know where to look. But Iโ€™ll admit, the first time I tried, it took me 20 minutes just to find the right menu. (Donโ€™t judge me!) Hereโ€™s what you need to do:

  1. Log into your DreamHost account.
Go to the Manage Email page from the dashboard. Youโ€™ll find it under the โ€œMailโ€ section. If youโ€™re like me and always forget where things are, just use the search bar at the top โ€“ lifesaver!
  2. Click โ€œAdd New Email Address.โ€
Youโ€™ll see an option to create a new email address or set up forwarding for an existing one. Choose your domain from the dropdown menu, and then enter the email address you want to forward.
  3. Set the forwarding address.
In the โ€œForward toโ€ field, type the address you want emails forwarded to, like your Gmail account or another provider. Double-check for typos โ€“ I once spent hours troubleshooting only to realize Iโ€™d misspelled my own email. Facepalm.
  4. Save your settings.
Hit the save button, and youโ€™re done! DreamHost will start forwarding emails immediately (though it might take a few minutes for DNS settings to catch up).

Pro Tip: If youโ€™re forwarding to Gmail, set up filters in your Gmail account to label incoming messages from your DreamHost domain. It makes organization a breeze.

Common Use Cases for DreamHost Email Forwarding

So, why bother with email forwarding? Let me tell you, there are a ton of practical reasons. Here are a few Iโ€™ve personally used:

  1. Streamlining multiple inboxes:
A few years ago, I had three different websites, each with its own email address. Checking them all was a nightmare. Forwarding everything to one inbox saved me hours every week.
  2. Professional branding:
Even if youโ€™re just starting out, having a custom email like contact@yourdomain.com looks way more polished than using a generic Gmail address. But letโ€™s be real โ€“ youโ€™ll still probably use Gmail to manage it all. (I do!)
  3. Team collaboration:
Need to forward emails to multiple people in your company? You can set up group forwarding with DreamHost. For example, emails sent to support@yourdomain.com can be forwarded to your entire support team.

Pro Tip: Avoid forwarding to free email providers like AOL or Comcast โ€“ DreamHost doesnโ€™t allow it due to potential spam issues. Stick with Gmail or Outlook instead.

Troubleshooting DreamHost Email Forwarding Issues

Hereโ€™s where things can get tricky. Sometimes, email forwarding doesnโ€™t work as expected, and it can be super frustrating. Trust me, Iโ€™ve been there. Hereโ€™s how to tackle common problems:

  1. Emails arenโ€™t forwarding:
First, check that you entered the correct forwarding address. (Seriously, triple-check.) Then, make sure your domainโ€™s DNS settings are configured properly. If youโ€™re using a third-party DNS provider, youโ€™ll need to add DreamHostโ€™s MX records.
  2. Spam filters blocking forwarded emails:
This oneโ€™s a pain. Some email providers, like Gmail, might flag forwarded emails as spam. To fix it, add your DreamHost email address to your Gmail contacts and mark any flagged emails as โ€œNot Spam.โ€
  3. Overwhelmed by forwarded messages:
If youโ€™re receiving a ton of junk mail, set up filters in your forwarding email client to automatically delete garbage. DreamHost doesnโ€™t offer built-in spam filtering for forwarded emails, so youโ€™ll need to handle this on the receiving end.

Pro Tip: If all else fails, DreamHostโ€™s support team is fantastic. Just open a support ticket, and theyโ€™ll help you sort it out.

Alternatives to Email Forwarding on DreamHost

While DreamHost email forwarding is great, itโ€™s not the only option. Hereโ€™s a quick rundown of alternatives:

  1. Using email aliases:
DreamHost lets you create aliases, which are like nicknames for your main email account. For example, you can make sales@yourdomain.com an alias for info@yourdomain.com.
  2. Setting up POP/IMAP:
If you want to send and receive emails from a single client like Gmail, configure your DreamHost email as a POP or IMAP account. This way, you can store emails and reply directly from your custom address.
  3. Third-party email hosting:
If you need advanced features, consider using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for your domainโ€™s email. They integrate seamlessly with DreamHost domains and offer better spam protection.

When you create a new email account, you can either use it as a fully hosted email or forward it to another email address but not both.

  1. This feels like a manipulation. They are trying to sell us google workspace. Without the ability to do both we can no longer forward to and reply from our gmail account. Weak. Time to look for a different provider.
